THE RADICAL ACADEMIC
The Secular Student Alliance at UAB
"All thinking men are atheists." Samuel Clemens
There has been a strong bias in the United States, among the moralist right-wing types, against Higher Education. They decry our halls of academia as breeding ground of dangerous, dissident liberality. I'm a student at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
I know what you're thinking:"Oh, they're not talking about you. It's Alabama."
I understand you thinking that. But first, I assure that my personal world view is EXACTLY that of the kind they fear is being churned out at these Atheistic, Immoral, (they may say "Amoral" if they had a little schooling themselves, but if so they also probably say "IRregardless) Communist Universities. The fact is: when you have enough information and can finally look at it from a rational angle, that there is no point or profit in playing along with the fairy tale anymore. How long did some of you keep on pretending you didn't know Santa was a fake just because it was fun, and seemed to please your parents? Well, do any of you still worry that if you do something naughty, maybe wipe your nose on the towels at another's home, that a man who lives in a village on A FLOATING ICE SHELF, in a freezing climates, is not going to bring bring you toys or electronics or porn or whatever you want ON HIS SLED PULLED BY FLYING REINDEER?
It just became clear. It's not as if I chose not to believe anymore. I just KNEW that I no longer did. We can't know the Bible has historical reliability, I've seen no amazing feat or serendipitous occurrence that wasn't more simply and believably accounted for by probability or unknown natural influence, as opposed to the nature and will of an all-power being named YHWH, or JEHOVA, but most often just GOD. What's funny is, people, fundies and other theistic literalists, will make statements as if they don't realize that theirs is not the only name by which this fairy-godfather is being called in the rest of the world; at the same time they are pointing out the infamy and absurdity of other theist mythology.
I'm all for tolerance, and compassion.
But the majority of this country claims to believe that the physical world was created by and operates on the volition of a supernatural, bipolar fairy godfather.
Yes, people have disagreements.
This is different. And don't say "everyone has a right ti their own opinion, because that means almost nothing. Of course anyone is entitled to think whatever one happens to think--you don't have any choice . . . . . .until presented with new data. When you the facts so clearly and completely negate your opinion, then in what sense is it meaningful that you "have a right" to be wrong?
And this lie, Christianity, has been used since the Romans first recognized the effectiveness it had in corralling its population. People need systems, they need government and regulation, and herding, because humans are ANIMALS.
Just primates with less hair and far more complex adaptive characteristics.
And we have been evolved (most of us) for far long enough not to need, or even be able, to believe in god.
